It's how one looks at the journey. For us, it was at the end of the Atchafalaya Basin drive before heading into New Orleans that we found we were famished. Looking at Yelp, we saw the most adorable named restaurant, "Not Your Mama's Cafe & Tavern." It was a "short" 12 mile drive to Livonia off of the I-10 run, compared to the other options of 30 plus miles away. However, after this experience, it is worth any drive, long or short. It is NOT to be missed. The traditional brick porched building located on 190 had the name of the restaurant painted upon its side. Walking into the immaculate entry, even the patrons were extremely friendly and kind. Being seated by the wonderful hostess, our spacious table was nestled against the wall filled with affirmations and eclectic dated art. The decor was a rustic French Quarter motif with smattering of fun and imaginative doors placed Strategicly throughout the space. Our hostess immediately requested what our choice of drink would be, and if not for the fact that we were driving much further, we chose a nonalcoholic beverage. The tea was not watered down as many places would do to stretch out the inventory. Our waiter and most remiss we missed his name appeared with the first wonderful taste treat of round soft delectable puffs that are the signature rolls. The flavor and how they melted on one's pallet brought wide-eyed excitement for the second bite. The menu choices were wonderful, with the off centered Cajun flare to each that kept the Louisiana tradition alive throughout each dish. We chose two appetizers of Fried Green Tomatoes with Remoulade and perfectly seasoned fresh shrimp. The other dish never heard or tried before, Boudin Dip that was served with deep fried wonton triangles. The tomatoes were fried in a flavorful batter that was so light, that it that it did not take away from the precisely picked green crunch of the tomato. The Remoulade is creamy fresh and the right heat, with a juicy Cajun seasoned shrimp that burst pure goodness. The Boudin Dip was made with authentic local boudin sausage, an unknown but amazing creamy base, and baked with a monterrey jack cheese. The entrees were the Stuffed Shrimp Sarah and Eggplant Sarah. Both focused items were put upon a bed of Crawfish Etouffe and rice. The crawfish was abundant and fresh with an Etouffe that was like velvet. Abundant portions didn't allow us room for dessert, but if they were anything like the rest of the food, I am sure they would have been exquisite. No one should miss this amazing and wonderful cafe. Food was delicious 😋...Unfortunately our server was too busy dealing with a party at the other end of the restaurant , so we were somewhat forgotten about. But fortunately for my small party of three, John stepped up and took great care of us. I still left my 18% on top of the bill and John a separate tip of his own but honestly, he deserved it all! I had heard great things about this place but unless you're looking for a New York bistro that worries more about presentations than the food, then you're going to be surprised! The food was delicious but the portions were designed to maximize profits and not satisfy hunger. Very over priced for such small portions. Also the menu prices as high as they were didn't accurately represent the price charged for some items. My wife's Redfish on the menu was priced at over $26 dollars and we were charged over $34 and some change. So unless you want to spend well over $100 per person and still have to look for a Sonic or Taco Bell afterwards then this is NOT the place you want to go. Not your Mama's Cafe offers down to earth home cooking meals. 🤗 It's delicious!! 😋Fried green tomatoes was superb!! Food was great, service was excellent & atmosphere was comfortable!!! I would suggest trying this establishment, a person wouldn't regret it, It'll be worth your time!!! 😉 The crab platter was fantastic! 😊 The stuffed mushrooms are also a great choice but the fried mushrooms are equivalent to the stuff. The waitresses are super nice!! You have to experience it because explaining it just doesn't give it justification!!! We had the Fried Green Tomatoes and the Boudin Dip, both were fabulous. Their bread roll are amazing. The service was great and the style of the Cafe was very cool.
