My boyfriend and I decided to go to the Mad Italian for dinner tonight, as we hadn't been in years and wanted the nostalgia. I ordered spaghetti with meatballs and marinara sauce, and he ordered shrimp and chicken Parmigiano. We also both ordered a side salad and a stuffed mushroom appetizer to share. The side salads were okay. The stuffed mushrooms were bland. His entree was brought out with fettuccine alfredo, not spaghetti and a tomato sauce like Parmigiano would have, and the alfredo had absolutely zero taste. For $19.99, the portions were incredibly small. My meatballs were definitely frozen and thawed in a microwave, no sear or baking to them. The "marinara" sauce was just diced tomatoes and some basil. The pasta hadn't been drained before plating, so my whole plate was swimming in tomato water. Again, zero taste/flavor. Our total for one Coors Lite, a water, appetizer, and two entrees was $55, plus a 4% service charge for paying by card. We will not be returning. A couple traveling north was about to walk in as we were walking out and asked us about the food. We told them to keep going up 95 to Colonial Heights or Chester. This local restaurant is pretty good. It's a fun place to walk in as they have tables & chairs and a full dinner party setup on the ceiling... like the room is upside down. But it's definitely dated, but the service was pretty good each time we have been there (3-4 times now.) The food is good, not amazing, but pretty good. Like everywhere else, the prices for dinner was comparable to others. It actually cost a little over $100 for 5 adults with 4 teas and a water for our dinner this time... which I have to say I wasn't expecting 100%... but it was 5 people and most got the sampler special at $17 each... I think we normally come around lunch time when the prices are slightly lower. Overall (if you can afford the price) it's a nice place with friendly people.
