The short version: delicious, true Mexican flavours, veg options galore, friendly staff, and a really fun environment! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I walked into El Mundo yesterday to grab some takeout with zero expectations, after my intended restaurant choice was out of my favourite dish. What a perfect time to try some place completely new! Still, I wasn't imagining much more than maybe some palatable TexMex with one or two veggie-friendly options that I - as a vegetarian of 23 years - could stomach. To my surprise and delight, El Mundo is a hidden gem and an absolute plant-based paradise! It states clearly right on the extensive menu that the rice, beans, and even most sauces are vegan, and most every dish has a choice of 8 proteins or fillings, 4 of which are vegetarian or vegan. They even have meatless chorizo!!! (Never fear, carnivores, there were also plenty of meat options for those who turn up their nose at tofu-based protein.) When I mentioned to the bartender taking my order how excited I was to see they are willing to make most dishes vegan, she replied, "Oh absolutely! It's not hard at all to accommodate." EXACTLY! I wish more restaurants had that mentality vs. acting like us herbivores ought to be grateful they even bother to offer a store bought frozen black bean burger or (gag) a hunk of mushroom on a bun. For once, I didn't feel like I had to settle for a "meh" default option or pester the staff with a million questions to determine if the ingredients were safe for me to eat. It felt like the menu was thoughtfully selected to make easy, appealing, and suitable options for many dietary restrictions. I let the bartender suggest her favourite dish and ended up going with that: vegan mole enchiladas with meatless chorizo, with a side of happy-hour-priced chips & vegan queso. My food was ready in under 10 minutes, time which I spent happily enjoying the fun, eclectic atmosphere, perusing the menu for future visits, and chatting with the friendly staff. I arrived too late to eat on-site this visit, but the meal didn't suffer any for being brought home with me! My enchiladas were generously packed with super filling & savoury vegan chorizo, smothered in a rich mole that really hit the mark. It was smoky, spicy, earthy, and delicious. The side of rice, beans, & tomatoes added all the variety the dish needed. While decidedly hot (which I had told the bartender was OK by me), this wasn't so heavy-handed with the chilis that you can't taste anything else, striking a great balance. My side of vegan queso with chips was also impressively tasty, and even my non-veg family reported that it still managed to achieve that gooey, creamy "cheesiness" they look for in a queso dip. We all liked it more than we expected. I didn't get a chance to try the drinks this time, but the ones I saw leave the bar looked great, and the menu selection was ample and interesting, especially for tequila drinkers. I will definitely be returning for $5 happy margaritas or a tequila flight. My bill came to $23 or so including a small tip on my to-go order: I still have one of my two enchiladas left AND some of the chips & queso, even after sharing. I feel like it was a fair value for the quality of the meal. As someone who is hesitant of "Mexican" food since most of it is just disappointing Tex-Mex, I am thrilled to pieces to have found a new go-to dining establishment. I can't recommend this place highly enough, and am eagerly awaiting my next visit to try all of the other veggie options on the menu! I had a chicken quesadilla yesterday for lunch. It wax delicious. I asked for less of rice & beans. I enjoyed the ambiance. The tables inside are beautiful. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
So, first off, my rating is based solely on the fact that I received the wrong food twice. I'm not sure how a restaurant accomplishes that exactly, but perhaps they're just exceptional. Otherwise the restaurant was fine: the ambiance is great, service seemed good at the table, margarita was tasty, and everyone else in my party seemed to enjoy their food. I ordered southwestern enchiladas with chicken. I received bison instead. I ate a bit, but thought it tasted off (dim lighting and bad eyesight) but finally realized it wasn't what I ordered/wanted so I asked my waitress about it and she identified it as bison. Everyone else was mostly through with their meal, so I asked her to pack CHICKEN enchiladas to go for me and I would have lunch the next day. I guess I should have checked the meal before I left, but I've honestly not heard of a kitchen messing up the same order twice. Also I think I assumed the waitress would have checked? I opened the bag up today and was very skeptical at the lid, which was clearly labeled "SWE B." Label was accurate: no chicken enchiladas. More bison enchiladas. Very disappointing! To add insult to injury, they also removed the beans, which are the best side! Overall I'm irritated because I paid for a meal I didn't get to enjoy, and I don't trust them to make food accurately in the future. This is a real issue when you have people with allergies and dietary restrictions. Is the kitchen actually capable of producing chicken enchiladas? We'll never know! Best house margaritas in town and Mexican favorites prepared with care. Try the Chipotle hit sauce. It's not the same wonderful atmosphere as the former Frankfort Ave location (please come back!) But it is a nice, multi level interior. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 3

Fun relaxing atmosphere, great service, casual, friendly, very good food options including vegetarian, and they keep the margaritas coming. Perfect place to meet up with friends! The locals obviously love it. Lots of seating options inside and out. Reasonably priced especially when there are specials. I’ve been here multiple times and I can confidently say El Mundo is consistent. The food, service and cocktails are always phenomenal. I know it’s a little more pricey than your average Mexican restaurant but a lot of the meats are sourced locally and you can really taste the difference. I will keep coming back. I had the Bison Enchiladas with Verde sauce and She had the Muscles. We both washed it down with margaritas and finished off with Mike's special cheesecake. It was all wonderful. I highly recommend and we can't wait to go back. Service Dine in Meal type Dinner Price per person $30–50

We got queso and salsa to start with. Both were okay but not exceptional. For our entrees we got the chili relleno and the green chili enchiladas. Once again, both were good, but nothing that would draw me back again. I would go back, but it's pretty far down my list of favorite restaurants in town.
First of, find parking road side. Now, they have seating in the back side of the restaurant that is kind of hidden. It was a hot, humid day but the temperature in the back was bearable. They have some fans. Ordered mussels as starters and then fish tacos and Chile Relleno as main entree. 4.5 stars for mussels. They were not cleaned properly and a speck of sand would hit your taste buds every now and then. Other than that the soup of mussels was good and so were the mussels. Fish tacos 4.5 stars again. The fillet was good and done to taste. Beans, rice, salsa was nothing extraordinary. Chile Relleno lacked taste so giving it a 3 star. Server was friendly and good ambience overall.

The staff was great and the atmosphere was great. Drinks were great, had a mojito, margarita and an old fashioned. All were very good. Now on to the food…. I feel like ppl who don’t know what good Mexican food is would like it. Had chips and queso, a grande burrito and my girlfriend had a quesadilla. The queso was gritty and the chips were oily like the oil wasn’t hot enough when they cooked them. The quesadilla was adequate. All I can say about the burrito is I hope you like beans. It must have had a whole can of black beans in it. It had a red/brown sauce on it that also tasted like beans. It was very Americanized and didn’t taste like authentic Mexican food at all. The food was B tier at best. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend you avoid them though bc price wise it wasn’t bad, along with the quirky atmosphere and very good waitress you will still likely have a good experience.
