I was a student who worked at a clothing shop from 1982 to 1986 around the corner from the place. After closing on a Saturday afternoon, I used to walk past the restaurant and enjoy the sounds...
I'm so happy that this iconic venue has reopened and live jazz performances have resumed! Every jazz legend has stood on that stage. It would have been a shame to shut down 41 years of rich music history. Here's to 41 more and beyond!
Probably the best live Jazz place in Durban. Opened in the early 80s, Rainbow was a place for everyone to enjoy good music together regardless of race. Simple menu with amazing food. Drinks are cheap. Toilets are relatively clean depending on the crowd. Saturday afternoons are extremely busy while Sunday lunch more mellow and laid back. On the road parking.

THE best jazz venue in SA. Not pretentious like the wannabee "jazz scenes" cropping up monthly - places selling R50 bottled water and high entry charges to keep the "undesirables" at bay - a jazz paradox when closely examined. Its a place where the toiling masses stop over ( free if charge) for a drink before they get to their (still) apartheid dormitory townships. Located adjacent to the Pinetown taxi rank, it a a popular place. Best open fire chicken around at the most affordable prices. Same goes for the drinks. An Amstel quart goes for R23. The best stillb is the music. All the Greats from Hugh Masekela, Sipho Gumede, Oliver Mtukudzi...et al. Those who know, know !!

The only info you need in this place is that you should go now! Alleged to be KZN's first integrated live music venue, the rainbow has been hosting music since probably before I was born. I have had the privilege of watching a number of great jazz acts here and would recommend it to anyone. The drinks are ridiculously cheap. The food is also super well priced and, if sharing, you can get a grilled chicken, bean curry, steam bread and chips platter for a couple of rhinos. Not to be confused with the Jazzy Rainbow.
It has changed last time I was there they were playing classic and soul music but now they playing qhom & some sort of house music
