I was really looking forward to visiting this place as I saw it on all of the blogs. However when we got there we were quite disappointed. There were many kids trying to sell us the coconut. Even if we just tried to take the pictures they wouldn’t stop following us around. Even when we clearly showed them that we do not speak Portuguese. It’s way better to drive through the tunnel and then go see the palm trees there.

Must be really cool. Without kids walking after you with machetes trying to sell you coconuts.. they kept walking with us and wouldnt take no as sign to leave us be. It was our first day on the island and though we found that almost everywhere everyone always walks around with machetes. it really was a bad way to start the vacation..

The North of Sao Tome is the most calm and calmest area of the island for a quick journey. The tunnel is a "must have" for pictures ;)

Cycled by as a white solo female traveller - not a native speaker, but speak decent Portuguese. Bought a coconut off the evil machete boys 😂 who are the sweetest, very shy pre-teens and hung out with them for a bit (they are also keen to practice some English). Shortly after the tunnel, the road degrades quite a bit, so not worth going further imho. Seriously people, if these kids scare you, maybe stick to holidays in Mallorca.

This is all about the views from the road to get here than the tunnel itself, with the mountain on one side and the sea and palm trees on the other

The famous tunnel on the seaside road.... when on the south side, you may search for the Indian (Native American) hiding in the mountain... A fun game for all ages...
