DELICIOUS! Ordered a small plate today - no enchilada - sub extra taco, and it was so good!! If you’ve never eaten at The Mexican Kitchen in Hattiesburg, MS, you should! Been a Hattiesburg go-to of our family since the 80’s! Only only only order a small, medium, or large plate. Period. And just know, you’ll either love it or hate it - no in between. This place used to have pretty good food. Not anymore. The dip is nothing close to what it used to be. The quesdillas only had one piece of chicken on one of the slices and they used cheddar chesse instead of white cheese. I would give a full review if they were actually open for business. It was a Saturday Night @7:15pm. They were closed, yet no indication before arriving that they would be closed. I won't return.

I've been going to this restaurant for about 40 years, and it is unique and irreplaceable. But be warned, you will either love it or hate it. It is like "The Dress" or "Yanny/Laurel": people see it differently. I love the salsa and chips, but they are not what you get elsewhere. The menu is simple. The food has its own character and has changed very little over time. Everything is fresh. The environment is very casual. Always check to see if they are open because their hours are limited and vary somewhat. This is my and my wife's favorite place. We came in and there was just a few minutes wait and we were seated. From that point to about 20 minutes later we were not given drinks, and my husband was given a menu and i was not. We had to ask for multiple item’s because they were not given to us (napkins salt straws etc). The waiter set more than one hot plate in front of my 18mo son who could have easily grabbed it and gotten hurt. I got the small plate (which gave a sampling of choices) nachos, and guacamole. It was delicious!!! I think the tamale was my fav on the plate, but everything was flavorful, fresh, and good size portion. The staff is friendly and attentive to their patrons. Excellent all around.
